Western Australia’s Coral Coast is one of those places that feels almost too good to be real. One minute you’re watching dolphins cruise past in the shallows, the next you’re swimming alongside a whale shark or hiking through deep red gorges. The landscapes constantly change, from white sandy beaches to rugged cliffs and remote islands teeming with marine life.
The region stretches over 1,100 kilometres from Cervantes to Exmouth and is packed with bucket-list experiences. Snorkel on Ningaloo Reef, explore the limestone spires of the Pinnacles, or fly over the bubblegum-pink waters of Hutt Lagoon. There’s no shortage of incredible places to see and explore.
Where is the Coral Coast?
The Coral Coast of Western Australia stretches over 1,100 kilometres from Cervantes to Exmouth, covering diverse landscapes, marine environments, and national parks. It can be broken into six key regions:
- Indian Ocean Drive (Cervantes to Jurien Bay) – A scenic coastal route featuring the Pinnacles Desert, white sandy beaches, and playful sea lions.
- Wildflower Country (Inland Coral Coast) – Seasonal bursts of colour stretching from Coalseam Conservation Park to Lesueur National Park.
- Batavia Coast (Geraldton & Surrounds) – A mix of history, culture, and nature, with the Houtman Abrolhos Islands, shipwrecks, and fresh seafood.
- Kalbarri & The Murchison – Home to Kalbarri National Park, Nature’s Window, and dramatic coastal cliffs.
- Shark Bay & Dirk Hartog Island – A UNESCO World Heritage-listed region known for Monkey Mia’s dolphins, Shell Beach, and remote island landscapes.
- Ningaloo Coast (Carnarvon to Exmouth) – A marine paradise with Ningaloo Reef, whale sharks, manta rays, and stunning coral gardens.
Best time to visit
Although the Coral Coast is a year-round destination, each season offers something different.
Autumn (March to May)
This is our favourite time to visit, with warm but comfortable temperatures and less humidity. It’s also the start of whale shark season at Ningaloo Reef, making it a prime time for snorkelling with these gentle giants.
Winter (June to August)
Mild daytime temperatures make it good for exploring national parks. It’s also peak humpback whale migration, with thousands of whales passing through Ningaloo and Shark Bay.
Spring (September to November)
The inland regions explode with colourful wildflowers, creating one of the best floral displays in Australia. The weather is still pleasant, and marine life remains abundant.
Summer (December to February)
Temperatures can exceed 40°C, especially inland. While the beaches are stunning, it’s the quietest season due to the heat.
Must-visit destinations & experiences
The Houtman Abrolhos Islands
Located off the coast of Geraldton, the Houtman Abrolhos Islands are a marine paradise with vibrant coral reefs, shipwrecks, and diverse wildlife. Snorkel or dive among tropical fish, visit historic sites like the Batavia shipwreck, and spot sea lions and seabirds in this untouched island chain.
Kalbarri National Park
One of WA’s most breathtaking national parks, Kalbarri offers stunning outback scenery. The iconic Nature’s Window frames the Murchison River, while the Kalbarri Skywalk provides panoramic views from towering cliffs. Inland, hikes through Z-Bend Gorge and Hawk’s Head reveal rugged, ancient landscapes carved by the river.
Shark Bay & Monkey Mia
A UNESCO World Heritage-listed region, Shark Bay is famous for Monkey Mia’s wild dolphins, which have been visiting the shoreline for decades. The area is also home to the Hamelin Pool Stromatolites, some of the oldest life forms on Earth, and the stunning Shell Beach, where billions of tiny white shells replace sand.
Dirk Hartog Island & Steep Point
For those craving remoteness, Dirk Hartog Island is a hidden gem. The site of the first recorded European landing in Australia, the island is now a nature reserve with untouched beaches and unique wildlife. Nearby, Steep Point is the westernmost point of mainland Australia, offering dramatic cliffs and world-class fishing.
Ningaloo Reef & Exmouth
What is arguably the highlight of the Coral Coast, Ningaloo Reef, is one of the most accessible coral reefs in the world. Swim with whale sharks (March to July), snorkel with manta rays in Coral Bay, or explore Exmouth’s Turquoise Bay, one of Australia’s most pristine beaches.
