day 01
Thursday Island

Thursday Island

Start your adventure in the northernmost tip of the Great Barrier Reef at Thursday Island in the Torres Strait Islands.

The Torres Strait is a vast geography that is home to beautiful islands, seagrass meadows, pristine and rarely visited coral reefs and the world’s oldest continuous culture.

Our adventure will commence with a unique cultural
ceremony and Welcome to Country with Traditional Owners, as we acknowledge the traditional custodians of the Sea Country of the Northern Great Barrier Reef which we will be travelling through on our voyage and their special connections to this majestic Sea Country. We will then set sail and visit Cape York at sunset.

day 02
Raine and Moulter Cay

Raine and Moulter Cay

Wake in the backdrop of the tropical waters of the Raine Island National Park.

Over the last six years the Great Barrier Reef Foundation has led a conservation program to restore this critical turtle nesting area and seabird habitat. The qualified and experienced crew will be on-hand to personally introduce everyone to the delights of this remarkable place.

Dependent on conditions, the trip may include a visit to Raine Island which has been transformed from a former guano mine to a thriving turtle nursery through the world’s largest effort to restore a critical green turtle nesting site. On a single night, tens of thousands of turtles make their way onto the beach to nest.

There may also be an opportunity to contribute to scientific knowledge as we search from the skies for the illusive omura whale aggregation which has recently been discovered.

day 04
Wreck Bay and Whale Sharks

Wreck Bay and Whale Sharks

Wreck Bay is a beautiful site for exploring caves, ledges and bommies, and swimming amongst corals, clown fish, turtles and gropers.

Spend the morning with researchers who are tagging whale sharks or jump in a helicopter in search for whale sharks, Omura whales and Oceanic manta rays from the sky. Once tags are applied you will be able to snorkel with the whale sharks. Today we will showcase some of the technologies that are being used to research large marine mammals, helping to guide management and conservation decisions being made by Reef managers.

Divers are in for a treat! Afternoons will be spent moored up behind Wreck Bay where there are numerous spots for snorkelling and diving.

day 06
Sandbanks National Park

Sandbanks National Park

By now you will be addicted to the Great Barrier Reef!

Today we will snorkel and explore reefs as we visit Sandbank No.8. known for the beautiful coral reefs, vibrant fish, turtles, and reef sharks that live below the surface.

The Sandbank is also a vital nesting site for turtles and seabirds. Adventurers will be able to view the turtle nesting sites and witness one of the great marvels of the natural world as thousands of baby turtles start their lives in the sands and waters of this part of the Reef.

day 07
Lizard Island

Lizard Island

This morning we will wake to see Lizard Island, which is surrounded by beautiful fringing reefs teaming with marine life.

As well as snorkelling and diving to see marine life under the water including the giant clams of the Clam Gardens, guests will be able to tour the Research Station. The Research Station is a world-leading supplier of on-reef facilities for coral reef research and education and is celebrating its 50th Anniversary year since it was founded by Frank Talbot.

Lizard Island was the ground zero for the bleaching events of 2016, which saw as much as 40% of corals in nearby waters show signs of bleaching, alongside an invasive Crown of Thorns outbreak which devastated the local coral populations.

The Island has become a key site for restoration activities and scientists from all over the world have been pioneering solutions to replanting heat tolerant corals at scale and how to best respond to Crown of Thorn starfish outbreaks. Optional Lizard Island Resort stay.

True North Tales

Returning to International

True North’s founding director Craig Howson and managing director Chad Avenell, recently met with local representatives ahead of recommencing Indonesian itineraries in 2023. Watch the video above to discover how True North ensures smooth operation well in advance of departure.

Time to Book Ahead

Hear from someone who truly knows about the value of booking ahead. “Cheggers” has travelled on the TRUE NORTH more than anyone else!

True North Sails into 30 Years

True North Adventure Cruises - has sailed into 30 years of continuous operations. The now revered adventure-cruise operator first cruised Western Australia’s remote Kimberley coast during 1987 when founding director Craig Howson commenced fishing type charters along a coastline that was and still is largely inaccessible from land.

The Helicopter

Adding another dimension to the adventure, most cruise options on the TRUE NORTH feature an on-board helicopter! Carrying guests in air conditioned comfort, the ship’s helicopter provides unique opportunity to witness grandeur; unique opportunity to fish billabongs that have never been fished; unique opportunity to discover your very own wilderness!

Myles Pollard's Fishing Adventure

There is nothing better than a day out on the water, especially when the fish are biting! Fishing on-board the TRUE NORTH is a much-favoured activity both with guests who have never picked up a rod before and, with those who have "caught them all!” Our guides encourage everybody on-board to “give it a go” and the TRUE NORTH’s multiple adventure boats never fail to bring back a swag of ‘fishing tales’! Stories about the ladies who out-fish the boys are pretty common, humorous equipment failures also come to note on a regular basis, then there are the ‘birthday fish’, the ‘monster fish’ and of course, the ones that got away! Our guides have seen and heard it all! Watch the video to find out more about actor Myles Pollard's fishing adventure!

TRUE NORTH Impresses Again

The TRUE NORTH has once again impressed on the world stage coming second in the 2020 Traveller Made Brand Storytelling competition. Traveller Made is Europe’s largest travel consortium and its members represent the very best in luxury travel providers and suppliers. The group’s inaugural Brand Storytelling competition was an opportunity for leading travel brand’s to showcase “the story behind their brand” and, the competition attracted entries from some of the world’s most respected travel brands. In such esteemed company, True North’s marketing team was especially pleased to receive this additional acknowledgement.

Adventure En Plein Air

West Australian artist Jacob 'Shakey' Butler joined the TRUE NORTH earlier this season and discovered the Kimberley's raw beauty. As the artist in residence, Jacob set up his canvas on remote beaches, beside freshwater billabongs and on-deck surrounded by pindan-coloured gorges. Watch the video above to hear Jacob describing how the Kimberley inspires the art of adventure.

Catriona Rowntree Talks With Craig Howson

A commonly asked question is “When is the best time to see the Kimberley?” And the answer is “The Kimberley is always at its best!” However certain times of the year can make it easier to satisfy particular interest. For example, if you would like to see plenty of whale action then departures in August and September are definitely for you! From late July humpback and southern right whales reach the Kimberley after swimming-up the west coast to reach breeding grounds in the north and it’s very common for guests to get great views of whales breaching and basking on the surface.
