Montgomery Reef: where the reef rises from the sea

Montgomery Reef isn’t just big – it’s alive.

As the Kimberley’s massive tides retreat, this 400-square-kilometre reef literally rises from the sea, revealing waterfalls that spill from its edges and channels teeming with marine life. It’s a surreal, shape-shifting spectacle that feels more like a living organism than a landscape.

Located in Lalang-garram/Camden Sound Marine Park, set deep in the stunning Buccaneer Archipelago, it’s a spectacle you simply can’t reach by road or see from shore. Fringed by uninhabited islands and some of the oldest exposed rock on Earth, this is one of the last truly remote marine environments – where silence is broken only by bird calls, rushing tides, and the occasional surfacing turtle.

It’s no wonder we include a visit to Montgomery Reef on every Kimberley cruise itinerary – there’s simply nothing else like it.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes this rising reef unique?
Montgomery Reef doesn’t just sit quietly underwater - it rises. As Kimberley tides retreat, a 400-square-kilometre reef platform lifts above the surface, revealing waterfalls, racing channels, and a reef that feels alive. True North gets you there with aerial flyovers and up-close adventure boat encounters.
What should I pack for my Montgomery Reef adventure?
Pack light with sun-protective clothing suited to tropical conditions, including a hat and sunglasses, plus your camera gear to capture the incredible scenery and wildlife. There’s no swimming or fishing - this is a relaxed, up-close encounter with the reef from our tenders, where you’ll be surrounded by marine life such as turtles, dugongs, sharks and abundant birdlife feeding across the reef.
When is the best time to visit?
The best time is during the Kimberley dry season from April to September. The massive tides that create the rising reef effect can vary dramatically throughout the year, with the most powerful tidal flows typically occurring during spring tides. We schedule all Kimberley itineraries to optimise your Montgomery Reef experience, with visits timed for optimal tidal windows. Weather conditions are most stable mid-season, though spectacular experiences are available throughout the entire dry season.
What onboard amenities can I expect?
Picture a boutique hotel at sea: air-conditioned cabins with ensuites, gourmet dining, premium Aussie wines, deck lounges, snorkelling and fishing gear, our own helicopter, and a crew-to-guest ratio that keeps things personal.
How does booking work for excursions and activities?
Your Montgomery Reef experience is included in your chosen Kimberley itinerary. Helicopter flights over the archipelago can be purchased in addition to your cruise fare, either as packages or individually. Activities involving the reef's tidal channels are subject to tidal and weather conditions for your safety, and the expedition team schedules all activities around optimal conditions.
What wildlife can I see at Montgomery Reef?
Montgomery Reef is home to abundant marine life within one of Australia's most important marine sanctuaries. Depending on what nature is doing that day, you might see: Green sea turtles congregating by the dozen during tide changes Dugongs feeding in the shallow waters Black-tipped reef sharks cruising the channels Humpback whales migrating through Camden Sound (from June to November) White-bellied sea eagles and various wading birds hunting across the exposed reef The marine park also supports six species of threatened marine turtles, Australian snubfin dolphins, Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins, and manta rays.
How does the reef "rise" from the ocean?
Montgomery Reef sits atop an ancient rock plateau. When the Kimberley's massive tides (up to 10 metres) retreat, the entire reef platform becomes exposed above the water line. As water drains off the plateau, hundreds of waterfalls cascade from the reef's edges in every direction, creating the dramatic appearance that the reef is rising from the ocean. Water rushes through channels carved into the reef, creating powerful currents and rapids. The entire process takes several hours, with the reef remaining exposed at low tide before the incoming tide reclaims it. Our crew will explain the geology and tidal science behind this extraordinary phenomenon.
Which True North Kimberley cruises visit Montgomery Reef?
All of them. It’s a keystone destination across our entire Kimberley portfolio. While the reef lies 20 kilometres offshore in remote waters with no day-trip access, we provide the time, expertise, and access that this remarkable location deserves.
