Kangaroo Island: Australia’s wildlife kingdom

Kangaroo Island is where Australia shows off. Just 13 kilometres off the South Australian coast, this rugged island feels like a different world – a 4,400-square-kilometre sanctuary where sea lions stretch out on empty beaches, koalas nap in roadside eucalypts, and more than a third of the land is protected wilderness. Most visitors arrive by ferry to Penneshaw, hire a car, and tick off the highlights. True North guests arrive by sea.

Set in the Southern Ocean and shaped by wind, waves and time, Kangaroo Island’s true beauty lies far from the bitumen. Think towering sea cliffs, secluded coves, underwater forests and a coastline alive with fur seals, dolphins and prized King George whiting.

That’s why we do it differently.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long do we spend at Kangaroo Island?
You’ll enjoy two full days exploring Kangaroo Island - far beyond the day-trip window most visitors get.
Do I need to be an experienced snorkeller?
Not at all. We provide all snorkelling gear, and our guides are there to assist first-timers and confident swimmers alike.
How do I get to Kangaroo Island by cruise from Adelaide?
True North's South Australian itineraries depart Adelaide and reach Kangaroo Island on Days 2 and 3. After a morning at Victor Harbour exploring the Oceanic Victor aquarium, TRUE NORTH anchors at Redhouse Bay on the island's Dudley Peninsula. You'll spend two full days exploring the coastline by expedition boat and road, with overnight anchorage at American River. No ferry queues, no car hire, no tight schedules, just seamless access to one of Australia's most celebrated islands. View all departure dates for availability.
What wildlife can I expect to see?
Kangaroo Island supports an extraordinary concentration of native wildlife. Expect close encounters with Australian sea lions at Seal Bay, long-nosed fur seals at the island's rocky capes, and dolphins in the surrounding waters. Koalas are easily spotted in roadside eucalypts, while kangaroos and wallabies graze at dawn and dusk. The island also hosts over 260 bird species, including the endangered glossy black cockatoo. Our specialist guides know where to look and when, optimising every wildlife opportunity.
What activities are included in my Kangaroo Island experience?
Your two days include expedition boat access to the north coast beaches, snorkelling with fur seals, fishing for King George whiting, beachcombing at secluded coves, a guided road trip to Flinders Chase National Park (Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch), and birdwatching at American River. All meals, Australian wines and beers, and guided activities are included in your cruise fare.
When is the best time to visit Kangaroo Island?
True North visits Kangaroo Island in January, delivering warm weather ideal for swimming, snorkelling, and extended daylight for wildlife viewing. Sea lion pups are typically visible at Seal Bay from July to September (outside the cruise season), but adult colonies and fur seals are present year-round. The expedition timing balances optimal conditions across the broader South Australian coastline.
How is a Kangaroo Island cruise different from taking the ferry?
The standard ferry crossing from Cape Jervis to Penneshaw takes 45 minutes, but that's only part of the story. You'll also need to drive 90 minutes south from Adelaide, queue for loading, then hire a car on the island to explore. Cruising with True North eliminates the logistics entirely. You step off the ship into expedition boats that access beaches unreachable by road, swim with wildlife from the water, and return to gourmet dining and a comfortable cabin each evening. The difference is immersion versus itinerary-ticking.
Which True North vessel visits Kangaroo Island?
Kangaroo Island features on South Australian itineraries aboard the TRUE NORTH, our 50-metre expedition vessel carrying a maximum of 36 guests. The ship's six dedicated adventure boats enable small-group exploration of the coastline, while the shallow 2.4-metre draught allows access to anchorages that larger vessels cannot reach. TRUE NORTH II may also operate this route; check departure dates for vessel availability.
