Horizontal Falls: where tides defy gravity

Horizontal Falls isn’t a waterfall – it’s a force of nature.

Tucked deep within Talbot Bay, this surreal tidal phenomenon defies every idea you have about waterfalls. As the Kimberley’s powerful tides surge through two narrow gorges in the McLarty Range, they create a horizontal torrent – water rushing sideways with such speed and volume it’s often compared to a whitewater rapid.

Surrounded by the ancient geology and island-studded beauty of the Buccaneer Archipelago, Horizontal Falls isn’t just rare – it’s remote, raw, and unreachable by road. This is tidal energy on a grand scale, changing direction with every tide, and revealing the dynamic heartbeat of the Kimberley coast.

It’s no surprise we include it on every Kimberley itinerary. You don’t just visit Horizontal Falls – you feel them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes this tidal phenomenon unique?

A Horizontal Falls cruise is unique because this wonder is definitely not your traditional waterfall. Instead of a vertical cascade, you're witnessing a fast-moving tidal flow that creates a horizontal water effect through narrow gorges in the McLarty Range. Cruising with True North means experiencing this from multiple perspectives: an exciting aerial flyover reveals the full scope, while adventure boat encounters (subject to conditions) get you close to the rough power. Unlike day trips, a cruise provides time to explore the entire Buccaneer Archipelago with its 800+ islands.

Will I see the falls from the air too?

Absolutely. Every guest gets the opportunity to add on a scenic helicopter flyover of Horizontal Falls. It’s the best way to grasp the scale, the power, and the incredible geography of Talbot Bay.

What should I pack for my Kimberley cruise?

Pack light, casual clothing suitable for tropical conditions, swimwear, sun protection (hat, sunglasses, reef-safe sunscreen), closed-toe shoes for expedition boat activities, a camera with extra memory cards and batteries, any personal medications, and a light jacket for air-conditioned areas and early mornings. True North provides all safety equipment and fishing tackle.

What else will I see in the Buccaneer Archipelago?

This region is home to more than 800 untouched islands. Expect rich mangrove ecosystems, tidal creeks, white sand beaches, and incredible marine life - including turtles, reef sharks, and sometimes even humpback whales during migration season.

How close will I actually get?

That depends on conditions - but when tides are favourable, you’ll get right up close in a stable, hard-hulled adventure boat. And if the current is too strong for entry, you’ll still experience the full spectacle from the safest and most scenic vantage points.

Are the Horizontal Falls safe to visit?

Yes. While the falls are powerful, safety is our top priority. Our expert guides assess tidal conditions in real-time to ensure every experience is thrilling, immersive and, above all, safe.
